Physiotherapy Assessment
Consultation
An animal physiotherapy consultation includes a comprehensive assessment of the presenting issue, whether it’s an acute injury, chronic condition, post-operative recovery, pre-surgical preparation, or performance-related concern. The therapist will review the animal’s medical history, current stage of healing, lifestyle, and activity levels. Owner goals are discussed in detail, and collaboration with vets, trainers, or farriers helps ensure a tailored treatment plan that supports recovery, performance, and long-term wellbeing.
Observation
As part of a physiotherapy assessment, the therapist will closely observe the animal’s posture, gait, and weight bearing to identify any asymmetries, compensatory patterns, or signs of discomfort. Functional movements, such as sitting and lying in dogs, or circling and backing up in horses, are assessed to evaluate strength, coordination, balance, and mobility. Muscle condition is also examined for tone, atrophy, or imbalance.
Physiotherapy Treatment
Manual therapy
As part of treatment, manual therapy may be used to address pain, tension, or restricted movement. Techniques vary between practitioners but can include massage, myofascial release, stretching, trigger point therapy, joint mobilisations, and positional release.
Electrotherapeutics
Electrotherapeutics may be used as a non-invasive treatment to support healing, reduce inflammation and pain, and improve circulation. Common modalities include ultrasound therapy, laser therapy, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMF), transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), muscle stimulation, and radiofrequency.
